Tips for Moving Out of College Housing
Another semester filled with memories, learning, and making lifelong friends has almost come to an end, and summer is just around the corner! Whether you’re planning on taking the time off to relax, work, or both, before the fun can begin, it’s time to move out of your college housing.
In the midst of class and studying for finals, you may not have put much thought into your move-out plan yet. We’re here to help! Here are some tips for packing up your college home and moving out for the summer.
Get Organized
Taking time to get organized before moving will make the process much easier. Start by making a list of all that needs to be done before moving day including sorting, packing and cleaning.
If you’ve been sharing a space with a roommate this semester, make sure you work together to sort through belongings, noting what belongs to who. You don’t want to wind up miles away from each other before realizing your roommate accidentally packed your favorite shoes in his bag!
Finally, sort your belongings into two groups: things you need over the summer and things you do not need until next semester. This helps identify what can be put in storage and what should stay with you over break.
Clean
With all the studying that has been going on over the semester, your room is bound to have gotten a little messy. Before leaving your college housing, be sure to thoroughly clean your space. Some colleges may even fine students who don’t clean up after themselves. Be sure to:
- Sweep, mop, or vacuum
- Dust
- Throw out all garbage
- Wipe down and disinfect the bathroom
And of course, you can’t forget about the mini fridge. Unplug the fridge, allow it to thaw, and give it a good clean before moving it. This will help avoid any unpleasant smells or spills.
Know the Move-Out Procedure
Some colleges have scheduled move out times or room checks that need to be completed before you leave. Make sure to familiarize yourself with your school’s move out procedure so you can avoid any surprises the day of.
