Packing Your Donations
When it comes time to pack up your home for a move, you may notice some belongings that you no longer want or need lying around. Rather than tossing these unwanted things in the dumpster, consider making a donation to your local charity!
Whatever items you are getting rid of, here is how to pack it up for donation.
Look Through Your Items
You may have gathered a large pile of belongings that you are hoping to unload. But before you pack everything up, take a closer look at things. Keep in mind that some donation centers will not accept:
- Mattresses
- Pillows
- Cosmetics and toiletries
- Cribs and car seats
- Weapons
- Some large appliances
If you are unsure about an item, call your donation center and ask if they will accept it.
As you sort through everything, it is also important to look at the quality of items you are planning to donate. Remember: it is okay to throw out some things! Try to avoid donating broken, stained, ripped, and very dirty items.
Clean Your Items
It is always a good idea to clean items before donating them. This gives those receiving or purchasing the belongings peace of mind and is a nice gesture. Run any clothing, towels, and sheets through the washer, dust off old decor, and disinfect toys.
Get Organized
Once you have gathered up all of the items you are hoping to donate, it is time to sort through them. Doing so will go a long way in helping the employees at your local donation center as they sort through hundreds of items a day.
Create separate piles for clothing, shoes, home decor, textiles, and toys. Neat and organized piles will make packing much easier.
Packing Up
Now that everything is cleaned and sorted, it’s time to pack up. You may use bags for soft items like clothes and towels, but try to pack books, home goods, and other heavy or breakable items in sturdy boxes and use bubble wrap when necessary.
Drop Off!
Once everything is safely packed, it’s time to donate! Check the hours for your donation center and head on over to make your contribution.
