Tips for Moving with Pets
The boxes are packed and you’re ready to get on the road to your new home. But how is your furry companion Max feeling about the move? Our pets are an important part of our lives, and just like people, a move can be confusing and stressful for them.
Here are a few ways you can make the move easier on your pets.
Give Them Space
Moving day will likely be hectic with everyone running around doing last minute tasks. Keep your pet out of the stress by having a friend watch them or bringing them to the kennel for the day. If you’d rather keep them close by, put them in a quiet, empty room with food and water.
For cats, make sure they have access to their litter box. If you have a dog, be sure to check on them often for bathroom breaks.
Do the same when you arrive at your new home and begin unpacking.
Keep Their Belongings Close
Ahead of the move, pack a box full of your pet’s favorite things and essentials including:
- Their bed
- Treats
- Favorite toys
- Leashes
- Food
- Litter box
Having these items in a designated, easy to reach spot will help ease their nerves once you arrive at the new house. Seeing their belongings in a new space will calm them down and make them feel safe.
Contact Your Vet
If you’re moving out of your zip code and will no longer be able to see your current vet, make sure you are prepared. Give the vet a call and ask for any necessary information and medical records. You can also ask if they know and recommend a vet in your new area!
Give Them Lots of Love!
Giving your pet extra love and attention will not only help ease their nerves, but yours as well! Take time to consider their needs and create a comfortable space for them and you’re sure to have a successful pet move.
