7 Summer Moving Tips

As kids wrap up the school year and summer approaches, most families are making plans for trips and vacations, however some are making plans for a big summer move. Summer is one of the busiest times in the relocation industry as people take advantage of the down time to relocate and settle into a new home before another school year starts back up in the fall. In addition to being super busy, summer also brings with it lots of heat, humidity, extra traffic from travelers, and more! If you are planning a move for this summer, or already have one on the books, here are 7 tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your move.

7 summer moving tips

1. Plan Ahead

As we mentioned, summer is one of the busiest times for moving, so if you are thinking of relocating in the coming months, the sooner you can make your arrangements the better.

2. Make Appropriate Arrangements

In addition to reserving your portable storage container and scheduling the relocation, it’s also important to book additional services ahead. If you will need child or pet care during your move, or if your relocation will require overnight accommodations, short term storage, or other services, be sure to book those ahead of time to ensure there are no hiccups in the process.

It’s also a great idea to plan ahead and schedule utilities hookups prior to your moving date to ensure you have things like power and water on move-in day.

3. Schedule Breaks

Since it will likely be warm, it’s important to schedule breaks for you and the folks helping you move. This will help avoid things like dehydration and heat exhaustion throughout the process.

4. Stay Hydrated

During these breaks, make sure that everyone is staying hydrated. Especially in our area, where humidity can be high, you want to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Pack coolers ahead of time and keep extra water on hand to make sure you don’t run out!

5. Fuel Your Body Correctly

In addition to staying hydrated, you also want to make sure that you eat throughout the day. Start the day with a hearty breakfast and include filling snacks to have throughout the day. Make sure to plan ahead for lunch, if you will be moving over the course of an entire day. You will burn lots of calories during the course of the day, so its important to make sure you keep your body properly fueled to avoid fatigue.

6. Dress Appropriately

It’s going to be hot, hot, hot, on moving day, so make sure to dress appropriately. Wear light weight clothing and lighter colors to help alleviate some of the heat.

7. Keep Safety Top of Mind

Finally, keep safety top of mind, keep a lookout for signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion, wear the appropriate shoes, and always be aware of your surroundings during the loading and unloading process.
